A fun and educational visit

My family and I loved Stirling Castle! The tapestries in the Queen’s Inner Hall were so impressive. It was incredible to see how intricate the hand-woven details were. The Palace Vaults were a hit with our kids. They enjoyed seeing tools from the 1500s and interacting with the exhibits. We also loved exploring the Great Kitchens. It was fun seeing how the chefs baked bread and cooked feasts. Definitely recommend visiting if you’re in the area!

Great for history lovers

The castle was amazing. I loved seeing the tall windows and imagining James IV hosting royal banquets in the Great Hall. Queen Anne Gardens were lovely. I really enjoyed the 200-year-old twin beech tree. The Stirling Heads Gallery was interesting. The carved oak medallions of kings, queens, and nobles were a standout. It gave me a real sense of the castle’s history and artistry. If you’re interested in history, art, and royal life, this is a great way to spend a couple of hours.

Stirling Castle Entry Tickets

EXPLORE A HISTORIC CASTLE

Stirling Castle is one of Scotland’s most historic and important castles. Located on a high, rocky hill, it provides beautiful views of the countryside. The castle has been a key fortress for over 900 years. In the 1500s, this was the main home for Scottish kings like James IV and James V. They held royal ceremonies and state events here, showing off their power and wealth. With Stirling Castle tickets, you can explore three main areas.

SEE THE GREAT HALL AND ROYAL PALACE

Start in the Great Hall, completed in 1503 and measuring 126 feet (38.5 meters) long by 36 feet (11 meters) wide. It is Scotland’s largest secular medieval building. This is where the king and queen hosted grand banquets. See its tall windows and richly decorated walls. Then visit the Royal Palace, childhood home of Mary, Queen of Scots. You’ll recognize the lavish Renaissance style in its decorations. In the Queen’s Inner Hall, you’ll see seven hand-woven Stirling Tapestries. They were inspired by the early 1500s Hunt of the Unicorn series. Next, you can explore the Chapel Royal, built in just seven months for Prince Henry Frederick’s baptism. Then, move on to the Great Kitchens. Here, the staff made bread, pies, venison, and salmon for the royal table.

GARDENS, GALLERIES, AND VIEWS

After exploring the inside, step outside to the Queen Anne Garden. Enjoy the peaceful greenery and don’t miss seeing the 200-year-old twin beech tree. Next, head to the Stirling Heads Gallery. There, you can see carved oak medallions of kings, queens, nobles, and biblical figures. After that, head to the Palace Vaults for some interactive exhibits. Explore music, tools, fabrics, and games from the 1500s. Finish your tour at the King’s Knot and Royal Park. Here, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Southern Highlands and the Ochil Hills.

King’s Knot and the Round Table

Step into the King’s Knot, a stepped, octagonal earthwork in the royal gardens of Stirling Castle. Long ago, kings and nobles used this space for jousting, hunting, and falconry. In 2011, archaeologists found a round feature under the earthworks. This suggests there may be an older structure below. For centuries, writers have connected Stirling Castle to King Arthur’s Round Table. Many accounts also suggest the Round Table was located right here. John Barbour in the 1300s and Sir David Lindsay in the 1500s both told stories of a round table at or near the castle. Today, the King’s Knot lets you imagine the legendary Round Table standing right where you walk.
